Inspired by the movie version of Jerome Kern's Show Boat (1929) released by Universal Pictures, Alam Ara had a total of seven songs and the music is done by Ferozshah M. Mistri and B. Irani. It also features the hit song "De de khuda ke naam per" which happened to be the first song of the Indian cinema as well.

But the most unfortunate news is, the film is no longer available in its original format as the fire at National Film Archive of India, Pune, in 2003, destroyed the last surviving prints of this classic by Ardeshir Irani.

As per the Whois Data Reminder Policy (WDRP) adopted by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 2003, each domain registrant will be reminded annually by the ICANN-Accredited Registrar for review of their current Whois contact information data, and make any corrections to keep the contact data up-to-date because as per the terms of domain registration agreement, the provision of false Whois (contact) information can provide grounds for cancellation of domain name registration.

So at least once a year, it becomes mandatory that you verify your submitted Whois Contact Data for your Domain Name and make any corrections if needed. Whenever you encounter issues with your ISP's DNS servers set for your network connections, there are chances that you cannot access your favorite website, or the servers becomes so busy that it slows down to the point that it doesn't respond and sending packets becomes a snail's pace. This is a common problem faced by DSL subscribers and rarely by ADSL Broadband users as well.

The best solution to this DNS server connectivity problem is simply changing the your network's preferred and alternate DNS server addresses manually to either OpenDNS server addresses or Google Public DNS servers.

Google Public DNS is a new, simple, and much faster when compared to openDNS and comes very handy in cases when DNS servers of your Internet Service Provider aren't responding in a timely manner. Head-on to my previous post to know - How to Setup Google Public DNS IPs for Your Internet Connection
Google Public DNS Servers Ping Test
On a server ping test with command prompt, you can notice that the Google Public DNS servers responding swiftly when compared to that of OpenDSN server ips'.

Although Google Public DNS is trying to impose an edict on the internet, BSNL Broadband service which is most common and famous in India, provide server speeds that blows Google Public DNS way out of the water with an approximate round trip time that ranges between 25-40ms with absolutely 0% loss most of the times.

Google Public DNS
Before getting into the actual process of how to setup Google public DNS IPs for the internet connection, let us first know what this DNS and Google Public DNS IPs actually are, and why should we try using Google Public DNS IPs for internet connections.

Domain Name System (DNS) is an essential component of the web's infrastructure as it serves as the Internet's phone book that translates human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses to render the corresponding web-pages.

For example, the domain name www.publicdns.com translates to the addresses 192.0.32.10 (IPv4) and 2620:0:2d0:200::10 (IPv6). And by default, your computer network settings are configured to use your ISP's DNS servers and every time you type a domain name or its IP address in your browser, your computer performs a DNS lookup before the web page starts loading. So the more the internet usage is, more will be the number of DNS lookups bearing much load on your ISP's domain name servers and ultimately slowing down your browsing experience.

As the best alternative to your ISP's DNS servers, you have the option to use Google Public DNS which is a free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service that boasts itself to speed-up your browsing experience with improved levels of security and performance. And literally it can be easily understood that the IP addresses used by Google public DNS servers are called Google Public DNS IPs which are as follow:
  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4
Often times, these Google Public DNS IPs come most handy when there are some DNS issues with your ISP that is blocking your favorite website, in which case you can access the site if you can setup Google Public DNS IPs for your internet connection. You need to have administrator/root privileges to change these DNS server settings.

How to Setup Google Public DNS IPs for Your Internet Connection on Microsoft Windows XP

  1. Click Start, click Run... and type control and then click OK. This takes you to your Windows Control Panel.
type CONTROL run command to access windows control panel

Windows Control Panel Network and Internet Connections   Windows Control Panel Network Connections in Classic View
Control Panel Category View and Classical View (click to enlarge)
  3. From your network connections listed, select the active connection for which you want to want to configure Google Public DNS. Whether it may be your Ethernet (LAN) connection or wireless connection, right-click on it, and click Properties.
    Ethernet Connection Properties
    Network Connections
  4. Under General tab where it says "This connection uses the following items" select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click "Properties".
    Local Area Network Connection Properties

  5. Before actually changing your server settings, make sure you write down your current IP settings and the DNS server addresses for future reference or backup purposes.

Now, replace your preferred and alternate DNS server addresses with the IP addresses of the Google DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
    Internet Protocol TCP/IP Properties

  6. Finally click OK and then Close Network Connection Properties window.

In the past couple of years there has been a growing trend on the internet for personalization. People have personalized profiles for forums, discussion boards and social networks. This is also reflected in the personalized homepage sector. Many websites offer a widget-based start page that users can customize. This is a growing area of the web, with a lot of competitors vying to be the start page for millions of internet users. Step forward myhomepage, a new contender for your browser homepage.

Myhomepage is an online personalized homepage, bookmarking tool and online password manager. It also has some form fill functionality that allows you to login automatically to supported websites. It was conceptualized and founded by Max Aengevelt and Massimo Agostinelli who are two young entrepreneurs from Europe. You can check out their CrunchBase profiles here and here. Myhomepage is approaching the personalized homepage from a new angle – by offering lots of different features for users.
myhomepage-front-page
They are aiming to be the website you have as your browser homepage, however they are different from other competitors because they are not widget-based and they are not a news aggregator. This might be negative to you, but the features it does have might be more beneficial.

My Homepage

The first feature of myhomepage you will see is the My Homepage. When you sign up, you will be presented with a screening offering popular websites for you to add to your homepage. You don’t have to pick any or you can pick all of them. My Homepage is your start page, save all your favorite websites here and then log in and navigate the internet easily and efficiently.
The majority of internet searches are for websites that are frequently visited, such as Yahoo or Google. This saves users time because they can access bookmarks straight away. Browsers also offer bookmarking, but myhomepage is an online service. This means wherever you go, you will be able to login and find your bookmarks – any time and any place.

My Bookmarks

Bookmarking is at the heart of myhomepage. You can bookmark websites in three different ways: through the search bar on the website, through a bookmark button on your browser or by importing them from your browser. It's really easy to add bookmarks and add them to your My Homepage. You can either do it as you save your bookmark, or on the My Bookmarks tab, right click the bookmark, select Add to My Homepage and it will be added straight away.
bookmark search
Bookmarks are organized by tags. Tagging works really easily, just select or create a tag when you save a bookmark or go back and tag a bookmark after you've saved it. Tag it with as many tags as you want, with as many words as you want too. You can quickly find your bookmarks again by selecting the tag from the My Bookmarks tab menu. You can also email your bookmarks to your friends – a great way to share websites.
 alt=

Password Vault and Auto Login

Another feature that is key to myhomepage's concept is the Password Vault>. Users can save password information for every website they have bookmarked.
password vault
This is beneficial for two reasons. Firstly, you never have to remember a password again; you can easily find it when you log in. Secondly, you can also increase your online safety. The safest passwords to use are often the hardest to remember. But using myhomepage as an online password manager you can use a very difficult password without worrying you'll forget it. Myhomepage also offers auto login and form fill support for selected websites. This makes it even easier for you to log into your bookmarks. Unfortunately, they don't yet offer every website and they don't allow you to select the form and let them process it. You have to let them know which website you would want them to support via email. Customer support is prompt and helpful.
set up auto login

You might also want to check out this video showing a demo of the site

In conclusion, it is interesting to see how myhomepage is targeting internet users. The website focuses on helping people organize their online work and life. It has a lot of benefits, the biggest two being it is online and it offers auto login for selected websites. These two features make it stand out from the rest of the crowd because a lot of services in this area work through your browser which unfortunately means you can't access them from another computer or a different browser. With myhomepage you can access all your bookmarks from work, school or home.

The website does have a few areas it could improve. Firstly, more sites for the auto login would be great - perhaps a way to train the system when it comes across new websites with a login form rather than having to email them. It would also be great if there was more customization involved – specifically on the personalized homepage. A great idea would involve more social features – rating public bookmarks, seeing the most popular bookmarks etc. Overall, myhomepage is a very good web service. It will be interesting to see how they develop further and what new features they will implement. You should check it out if you have a hard time organizing your bookmarks and online work. It's completely free and enjoyable.
