Hostgator is one of the best because of their good customer support. I've been using them for 3 years.
I've been using Hostgator to host 10 fairly low traffic blogs. To be frank I wasn't expecting much but there uptimes are good. I gather they have recently changed from Fantastico to their own in house installer. If you blog is really important, ie you are monetizing it, then get a vps rather than a shared hosting account.

In my opinion Hostgator is not a good hosting company. I have had some bad experiences with them. They are popular because they are offering unlimited web hosting which is IMPOSSIBLE. Nobody can have unlimited hosting.. even if your web server has all the HDDs in the world it still wouldnt be unlimited, think about that ;)

It would be really nice if hosting was cheaper. Say like web hosting for a cent :) Anyway, free hosting services are good only if you are a beginner web page maker and want to see how things look. But if you want to have a serious and complex website, then paid hosting is the way to go.
Hostgator is one of the best in my opinion because the service offered is in realtime. With other competitors like godaddy you can sometimes have to wait for over 24 hours for a response to your query.

As a free web host, I would recommend freehostia.com or atspace.com. However, if you are going to create a Wordpress or any other CMS powered website that needs a database, I would recommend going with a paid web host - Hostgator is a good choice. Or I also recommend Bluehost.
